How to Choose a Flight Tracker: 7 Things That Matter (and Why fly24 Is Different)

4 November 2026 · 3 min read

Search "flight tracker" and you'll find plenty of options. They all show planes moving on a map, so how do you pick? These are the things that make a real difference day to day, and how we've approached each one at fly24.

1. Is it really free?

Many trackers are "free" with the useful parts behind a subscription: longer history, more details, fewer ads. Check what you actually get without paying.

fly24: every feature is free. The site is supported by ads, and nothing is locked behind a plan.

2. Do you need an app or an account?

Installing an app and creating an account is a lot of friction when you just want to know if a flight has landed, especially on an older phone with little storage.

fly24: works in any phone or computer browser. No download, no sign-up. Open fly24.io and search.

3. Can you search with the number on your ticket?

Your ticket says PK301 or 9P846, but planes broadcast a different callsign in the air (PIA301, FJL846). Some trackers only find the callsign, which confuses many travellers. Read flight number vs callsign for the full explanation.

fly24: type the ticket number and we convert it for you, including airlines whose code starts with a number, like Fly Jinnah's 9P.

4. Does it cover your part of the world well?

Live tracking depends on receivers on the ground, and coverage is uneven: very dense in Europe and North America, thinner in parts of South Asia, Central Asia and Africa.

fly24: we combine several data networks on one map and keep the newest position for each plane, so we see more than any single network does in the regions we focus on: Pakistan, the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. Coverage is still growing, and we're honest about the gaps in why some flights are missing.

5. Can you see what's landing at your airport?

Often you don't know the flight number, just "the flight from Dubai this evening". An airport board with live arrivals is the fastest answer.

fly24: over 1,100 airports have a live page with arrivals (minutes to landing), departures and planes on the ground, based on where the planes really are. Try Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad or Jeddah.

6. Is it easy to share?

The person asking "Have they landed yet?" is usually on WhatsApp.

fly24: every flight and every airport has its own link. Copy it from your browser and send it. It opens on any phone without an app.

7. Does it help you understand what you're seeing?

Altitude, squawk codes, aircraft types: flight data is full of jargon.

fly24: we explain it in plain language, in guides like squawk 7700 explained, why planes fly at 35,000 feet and our aircraft guide, which tells you how many seats a plane has and how to recognise it.

When you might need more

If you fly every week for work, you may want features fly24 doesn't have yet, such as alerts when a flight is delayed, years of flight history or tracking over the middle of the ocean. Some paid services offer those.

The short version

For quick, free checks on your phone, especially for flights to and from Pakistan and the Gulf, fly24 is built for you. Bookmark fly24.io and try it on the next flight you're waiting for.
